Rising Damp Symptoms and Diagnosis |
|
As many rising damp symptoms are common to most forms of damp
contamination such as bubbling paint, deteriorating plaster and
mortar, a holistic approach is required to ascertain the source or
combination of sources.
Rising Damp
Common Symptoms - Stained walls, blistering, salt-ridden and flaky paint, curled, stained and delaminating wallpaper, white salt powdered
surface residue, ( efflorescence ), fretting, powdering and eroded brick and stonework, powdery disintegrating mortar, rotting timber
skirting-boards and door-frames No mould.
Surface Condensation
Common Symptoms – Mould, stained walls and delaminating wallpaper, rotting timber skirting-boards
and doorframes. No efflorescence
Interstitial Condensation ( Within the material or cavity ).
Masonry will be visibly wetter, (darker in colour), above the damp-course level and often rising higher under brick window sills where
cavity ventilation is restricted.
Penetrating / Horizontal Damp. (
Masonry below ground level )
Common Symptoms - Stained walls, blistering, salt-ridden and flaky paint, curled, stained and delaminating wallpaper, white salt powdered
residue, (efflorescence), fretting, powdering and eroded brick and stonework, powdery disintegrating mortar, rotting timber skirting-boards
and doorframes.
Inadequate Sub-floor Ventilation.
Common Symptoms of inadequate sub floor ventilation include - Musty damp smell, stained walls, mould blistering and flaky paint, curled, stained and delaminating wallpaper, rotting
timber skirtings and doorframes, swollen warped, ( cupped ), floorboards, rust stains around nail-heads, gaps and cracking between the top of
skirting boards and the masonry. No efflorescence.
